HOBOKEN -- As expected, thousands came to Hoboken today to enjoy the festivities and wear green in honor of the St. Patrick's Day parade down Washington Street. Here are some photos. On the downside: One TV news station reported that police had to break up four house parties by noon.

PS--Irish eyes aren't smiling on Hoboken. Most of the Irish-Americans I know in this town hate this event and feel it denigrates their reputation. Why would the Reporter even use such an asinine headline?

I totally agree with HobokenReformer. And it's not just the residents and taxpayers who are getting hurt by this, it's also the local businesses that don't traffic in alcohol. I spoke to several that said they dread this day every year, They have to keep their doors locked and stand by to unlock it on the rare occasion a legitimate customer wants to get in. One said their front window was broken last year. If all of the city's non-bar businesses would get together and complain to the city, this madness would end. Personally I've learned my lesson and I take my family out of town now and don't return till Sunday. When we used to stick around we were unable t leave the house during the day or sleep at night anyway. Is this really the image we want to project about Hoboken?

What an appalling event this was again! I find it despicable that even the current city administration (whom I am generally supportive of on most issues) cannot master the balls to call off this collective insanity! Who is really being served by inviting rowdy crowds from all over the state to come here to get utterly wasted and trash our town? I cannot see anybody but the owners of bars and liquor stores benefiting from this obscene annual spectacle. Why do these special interest groups deserve their interests to be protected by the local government while at the same time trampling the rights of the taxpaying residents?

It is an insult to me as a taxpayer that I am not only forced to live through this madness every year, but then even get stiffed with the bills. How much did it cost the city (i.e. the taxpayers) to hire all the uniformed personnel? What is the cost of cleaning up the city on the day after? Who will pay for the damage to private property caused by the rowdy crowds?

I call upon the city government to provide the taxpaying residents with a full account of all costs associated with this event! I am really wondering what percentage of the residents would still support the continuation of this insanity in future years once its complete financial impact is disclosed!
