According to The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Halloween is "The evening of Oct 31 observed especially by children in merrymaking and masquerading." And while much has been made of the dangers of Halloween in our modern age (who can forget "Mischief Night," razors in the apples, etc.), most people seem to see Halloween as an excuse to dress up and, at least for an evening, become someone else. Maybe even forget their everyday cares in the process.

And for children, Halloween holds a special place in their collective hearts. It's the one day out of the year when they are encouraged to dress up as their favorite super hero or cartoon character. Parties are thrown, doorbells are rung, and let's not forget the Holy Grail of the children's Halloween quest - candy. And lots of it.

The Reporter hit the streets recently to see how local residents were gearing up for the holiday.

"I'll be taking my daughter out trick-or-treating for her first time." - Eric Williams, 35, Union City

"We're taking precautions. With all that's going on, we won't be going out. We just have a little party." - Amber Saroza, 43, Union City

"The children will dress up for school." - Cristian Fulgencio, 29, Union City

"We plan on getting dressed up for school. We try to teach the children fun and safety, that Halloween isn't about going out and getting in trouble." - Mrs. Denoia, Teacher, School No. 1, West New York

"We're having a little Halloween party at the day care center for the kids, with cake and candy." - Lisete Pagan, 27, West New York
