Secaucus students will return to school on Thursday to begin the 2007/2008 academic year. Teachers will be required to go to work for an in-service day on Wednesday.

Last week, students and parents prepared for the upcoming year at WalMart in Harmon Plaza.

"Don't get me wrong; I love my children, just sometimes I love them more when they're at school," laughed Shireen Yanuzzi.

Yanuzzi's daughter Samantha will enter third grade, while her son Matthew will enter sixth.

Samantha said that she is looking forward to spending more time with her friends, whereas Matthew was a little less enthused.

"I gotta go 'cause I gotta go," he shrugged.

The siblings said they are already looking forward to winter break.

New additions

This year, students at Secaucus Middle School and the neighboring Secaucus High School will have access to improved art rooms.

"What's going on is that the rooms are being redone," said Superintendent Constantino Scerbo.

This is the most recent of several improvements to the high school/middle school complex over the past few years, starting with improved science labs, then the addition of the performing arts center.

In the new art rooms, there will be a space for photography, including print and digital hardware for students. The cost of the facility is approximately $900,000.

Lilly Jacobs, who will enter her sophomore year, said that she is looking forward to the new art facilities. "I think it's great that we're going to take photography," she said.

Jacobs hopes to take "as many classes as possible" in the new art rooms.

"Yeah, we should be learning in school with books and papers, but we also need to learn art and culture," she said.

Supervising facilitators

Another change in the Secaucus school system was voted on at the last meeting of the Secaucus Board of Education.

The board voted to create two new positions for the middle school/high school complex. Those holding these positions will be given the title of "facilitator." There will be one for mathematics and one for science.

The role of these facilitators will be to oversee the curriculum and promote "leadership, coordination, and innovation" within their departments, according to the job description that was handed out at the Aug. 23 meeting.

These positions will take the place of the previous designated "supervisors."

Originally, the supervisor's role was to over see curricula throughout the entire district. These new facilitators will only over see their respective departments in the middle and high schools. By doing this, the Board of Ed. hopes to not only create a more specialized program, but also to save money.

"A district-wide supervisor would make more money. Plus they would have a longer year," said Scerbo.
